Bench Grinder Basics

Heavy construction equipment that requires occasional tune-ups may rely upon the use of metal hand tools. A compact bench grinder is a piece of machinery that can be used to sharpen chisels, knife blades, and other materials that are constructed of metal.

The Preservation of Metal

If a tool is pressed against a sharpening blade that is rotating quickly, the metal that is being treated may become hot to the touch. Steel that is overheated can become discolored and may not hold the shape that is attained through the use of a grinding wheel. To avoid damaging tools, considerations about a grinding wheel's revolutions per minute (RPM) rating should be taken.

A compact grinder that contains an adjustable speed feature is a piece of equipment that will not be likely to cause damage to a tool. An end-user can adjust the speed rating to one that is slow and consistent. A slower speed will offer more control through the grinding process.

Keeping a container of cold water near a workstation will also aid with protecting metal surfaces. After grinding a metal edge for a few minutes, the metal can be dipped into the water. This will protect the metal from overheating, plus will preserve the color of steel or another metal type.

The Use of Tongs and a Resting Station

Control should be maintained while using a power grinder. The use of tongs or a resting station will protect an end user's hands and prevent metal tools from slipping during the grinding process. Tongs can be used to grip hardware or angular and lightweight tools. Some compact grinders come with a built-in resting station. Machinery like this may contain a resting station that is secured to the front of a grinder.

If a compact grinder that does not contain a resting station is being purchased, wood can be used to create a portable station. To determine how tall a resting station should be, a machine operator should assess the size and the heaviness of the tools that will undergo a grinding process. The proposed angle of a blade should also be assessed. Some metal components may contain metal pieces that are slanted.

After inspecting all of the tools that will undergo a grinding process, lumber pieces can be anchored together. Hardware pieces can be used to anchor a resting station to the area where a grinder will be used. Coordinating heavy construction tuneups with grinding applications will guarantee that the servicing of equipment can be conducted as needed.
