Diamond Blades

Diamond blades are saw blades where the cutting surface has been impregnated with industrial diamonds or diamond dust. The diamonds are secured with a special metal bonding material, and as they cut, a little more of the diamond gets worn away as well as a little more of the metal bonding agent. That allows for new diamond cutting surfaces to be continuously exposed until the diamonds have completely worn away. The steel segment of the blade, which is the part that is attached to the saw, often has a channel that separates the diamond encrusted cutting surface from the steel center. The reason for this is that the diamond cutting surface can get very hot, so that channel allows for cooling. It also allows for water to be carried to and from the cutting surface in the case of a wet cut. 

It's also important to note that the diamond blades require more horsepower to run than regular blades do, so before you get a blade, look to see the horsepower rating on it so that you don't burn out your saw while cutting the tile. 

Grinding

When it comes to cutting the tile, a diamond cutting blade isn't exactly cutting the tile. What it's really doing is grinding away the tile material to create the cut. Instead of splinters, the discarded tile material is dust. That dust is part of why cutting tile is often done wet. The water helps to reduce the heat from friction as well as containing the dust that is generated during the cutting of the material.  Because of all that dust, you want want to remember to wear eye protection as well as something to cover your mouth and nose.
